Need a Costume For World Book Day?

Yes, it is that time of year again!

A time when many parents rush about in a mad panic trying to find a costume for their children. If your children are anything like mine were, you may not have even been presented with a note, or if you are lucky, a crumpled note may be found at the bottom of their school bag!

But, as you are aware the problems do not end there.

  • You have to choose a costume that will suffice as a book character
  • It has to be suitable to be worn all day long at school
  • It has to have a 'cool' look - especially for boys, who will not appreciate being dressed as Pinocchio at 10 years old!

Do not panic, this hub will give you book characters and some ideas for your childrens World Book Day Costumes.

Please be aware that these World Book Day Costume Ideas are for Primary School children (UK) and not for older children. At the moment there is a huge gap in the market for children aged 11 - 16 years, the kids costumes are too small, or plain 'uncool' and the adult costumes are just too big. This is something that we are working on with various manufacturers to try and fillthis gap, so watch this space!

Props n Frocks is based in Essex, England and as well as an online shop, also has a fancy dress shop that has been established since 1998. We work very hard to provide as much information as we can FREE of charge to help customers, new and old. Take a look at this page if you need even more children costume ideas for World Book Day

Scarlett O'Hara, or Nancy from Oliver
Supergirl

Some 'Cool' Girls Costumes

Girls do not seem to be as fussy about dressing up as boys and are normally quite happy to dress up as Red Riding Hood for example. However, we have found that The High School Musical Costumes have been a big hit with young girls and there are books out on Amazon at the moment so they should be okay to use.

Other 'Cool' girls costumes include:

  • Supergirl
  • Wonder Woman
  • Scarlett O'Hara

Pirate for Jack Sparrow

Some 'Cool' Boy Costumes

To be honest, you could probably choose any costume and find a book that it could be linked to. With this in mind, I have included some of the popular costumes that boys tend to like to wear. You could argue that Superman, for example comes from a comic 'book'!

  • Superman
  • Batman
  • Robin
  • Jack Sparrow
  • Darth Maul
  • Darth Vader
  • Zorro
  • Obi Wan Kenobi

Did You Know Childrens Costumes Must Have The Current CE Safety Standard Mark?

If not, this is something you must be aware of. Childrens fancy dress costumes comes under the EN71 standard. To explain this fully would take ages, but bascially it means that all childrens fancy dress costumes must have passed rigorous testing standards. These tests include Flamability & Choking.

A link is posted below if you wish to find out more.

Face Bobs

Face Bobs are any easy way to turn your child into an animal or a bird. Unlike 'normal' masks, Face Bobs do not stop you eating, drinking or speaking. From a health & safety perspective, Face Bobs are a safe alternative. All you will need to do is to get your son or daughter to wear appropriate colour clothing. Many childrens books have animals as main characters, so Face Bobs may just be what you are looking for.

Face Bobs are available in these animals/birds:

Dog - Cat - Donkey - Mouse - Pig - Cow - Sheep - Duck - Bear - Fox - Parott - Chicken - Rabbit - Owl

Last year I made my daughter into a playing card. The ace of spades to be exact from alice in wonderland. There was no one else with the same costume it was easy to make and she won the fancy dress contest to boot. This year I am making her (tonight last minute as always)into a book. Well it is world book day after all! lol

Sarah 11 months ago

For world book day you could actually dress up a book and draw a picture on the front of it.

Pippi Longstockings

Alice in Wonderland

sam 11 months ago

Most schools do not allow comic book/film characters. Its very difficult for older kids, whom end up looking plain clothed, as nobody knows who they are meant to be. A good one for older girls, is st.trinians.

em 11 months ago

well for people like 10-13 years old st trinians would be easy, heres what you need:

white shirt with unbuttoned collar

tie really loose

any school skirt pulled up OR short shorts over thin tights

with a skirt pop socks or cool tights

a grey or black cardigan]

slip-on shoes/pumps

you will need to do your hair in plaits or bunches, make them messy!

also put on make up and freckles!

there you are

Evissa 11 months ago

I'm 15 and in my school lots of people go as Oompa Loompas, Thing 1/ Thing 2, Fairies, Witches etc.

A good costume idea is getting a jump/boilersuit/overalls in different colours e.g. orange for a prisoner (or anyone from the book Holes) red for a fireman.

Regarding RA's comment regarding some non book ideas. Unfortunately not all parents do care about books and what we find, is that as long as their children dress up for this day in school, they are happy. Most of the suggestions here, can be linked to a comic book and you will be surprised how many children will attend school wearing this type of costume.

The introduction of the hub clearly states that this hub is for ideas for children up to the ages of about 11 years. I do appreciate that for older children, the choices here may not be what they are looking for. It may be worth checking on http://www.props-n-frocks.co.uk/children.php as you may find some more book character ideas there that are more suitable.

i am 12 and need a costume for world book day

RA 11 months ago

WBD is a challenge for parents but- and I'm going to sound pompous here- sending your child as a cartoon, tv or film character (not originally based on a book) is more or less admitting that you don't know or care about books. There are lots of good suggestions here but some unimaginative, non-book ones too.

Alice  11 months ago

Right let's try and get you girls all sorted. Duos may be difficult. Is your school quite flexible, or really strict on anactual book character. What about a comic book character - you can then use super girl, wonder woman - these are quite 'cool' costumes.

In the shop today we have had young girls going as Pink Ladies, Mulan, Jasmin, do any of these interest you. We stock so many girls costumes it is hard to let you know everything. checkout our range here http://www.props-n-frocks.co.uk/childcosland.php You can also callthe shop on 01245 327156 to get more ideas. Also checkout this page that I have done elsewhere, it may give you a few more ideas http://www.squidoo.com/World_Book_Day_Costumes_For

Hi everyone - if you can give me some of your favourite books, I will do my best to advise you on a suitable outfit for it. Just remember that childrens fancy dress is goverened by different rules to adult fancy dress. Most of the costumes tend to be more generic and may need a bit of adaption to be able to be used for a specific character.

Hiedi would be a simple costume to put together. Let me know if you do need help

Alexandra 23 months ago

A good way of getting children more involved with stories - and good that there are sources, like yours, that make it easy for parents.
